American Memory Historical Collections

American English Dialect Recordings: The Center for Applied Linguistics Collection

This collection contains 118 hours of recordings of different dialects from the various regions of the United States. Among these recordings is a speech by Amelia Earhart on the growing interest and role of women in science, especially through aviation and air travel. The transcript and audio recording of Earhart’s speech can be found by searching the collection on Amelia Earhart.

Photographs from the Chicago Daily News, 1902-1933

This digital collection includes over 55,000 images of urban life from the Chicago Daily News during the first three decades of the twentieth century. These photographs are part of the permanent collection at the Chicago History Museum. A search on the exact phrase Amelia Earhart returns 39 images. Her name is not included in the subject or name index. These pictures can only be located using the keyword search.

The Wilbur and Orville Wright Papers at the Library of Congress

From this collection of correspondence, diaries and notebooks, scrapbooks, drawings, and other documents highlighting the Wright brothers' pioneering work in aviation, view correspondence sent from Amelia Earhart to Orville Wright during 1932 through 1934.

Words and Deeds in American History: Selected Documents Celebrating the Manuscript Division's First 100 Years

This collection was compiled by the staff of the Manuscript Division to celebrates its centennial and provide an online display of ninety representative documents from the fifteenth century to mid-twentieth century. Included are the Earhart’s palm prints from 1933 and an analysis of them by Nellie Simmons Meier that reveals Earhart’s determination and passion for adventure and independence.

The Dream of Flight: A Library of Congress Special Presentation Commemorating the Centennial of Flight

This special commemorative exhibition celebrates the centennial anniversary of automated flight. Amelia Earhart is discussed and pictured in the Timeline of Flight, which recognizes her 1932 achievement in becoming the first woman to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean.

George Palmer Putnam Collection of Amelia Earhart Papers

This digital collection is maintained by Purdue University Libraries and includes more than 3,500 scans of photographs, maps, and documents relating to Amelia Earhart. The wide-ranging materials include the maps that were used on her last flight, photographs that she took while on the flight and mailed back to her husband, her medals, personal correspondence, her marriage license, and her prenuptial agreement. A biographical sketch, timeline, and interactive map of Earhart's last flight can also be found here.

National Women's Hall of Fame

Amelia Earhart was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1973 for her achievements in aviation.
