    Helsingborg isn't in Denmark, but across the Öresund in Sweden. The picture shows the harbor and the red city hall. (Credit goes to Flickr user martin8th.)

    Actually, the Danish city across from Helsingborg is Helsingør, if you are not a Swede or a German. (I happen to be some of both, but I have had occasion to deal with the Danish alphabet.)

    I wonder what the photo of "Hafenstrasse" (pure German) in this set actually represents.

    With much thanks to all--the description is updated to associate Helsingborg with Sweden! (The 1905 Detroit Publishing Company catalog for photochrom prints listed Helsingborg as part of Denmark, and we took that data on faith. What a good reminder that historic sources work better when verified.)

    The mention of Copenhagen on the postcard is specious too (Copenhagen is in Denmark of course) -- although it could refer to the paddle steamer which seems to have a Danish flag (white cross on red) mixed with a Swedish flag (yellow cross on blue). Possibly a reference to the steamship passenger service across the Öresund?

    I h ave been to Copenhagen a few times, but not recently, I have not stayed in the harbor area, and am not familiar with the overall geography of lthe city.

    Having said this, Havnegade looks like the right translation, and it looks like it could be the location.

    The picture was taken from the Helsinborg habour. I used to go to Helsinborg every 2 or 3 moths, next time i will try to shoot the same picture and post it here.

    The Library of Congress dates this picture between 1890 and 1900. A more accurate dating would be the summer of 1897. My conclusion is based on the following:
    The City Hall which is the red brick building with its clock tower (behind the aft spar of the steamer) stood ready in December 1896 and was inaugurated on January 9, 1897. The former City Hall (built 1799) which is the two storeys high gray building to the right of the new City Hall was demolished before the end of 1897. As pedestrians and passengers on the steamer are lightly dressed and use sunshades it has to be late spring, summer or august at the latest.

    This adds to the accumulating evidence that the pictures were taken during a Scandinavian trip in 1897: S.A. Andrée's 1897 Arctic expedition, 1897 Stockholm World's Fair.
