  • Gol Stave Church. Actually, only the inside is modelled on that church. The outside is modelled on Borgund. - hevold
  • The buildings were part of King Oscar II's collection, established in 1881. Sweden had won Norway from the Danes in 1814, but the Norwegians were not very happy with the new occupants. This was one of the King's attempts at building a national identity. Source: Oslo Folkemuseum. - hevold
  • The photographer is probably standing on top of Rolstad soveloft, a medieval building added in 1886. The collection was open to the public from 1881. - hevold

And actually the Norwegian spelling would be "Gol stavkirke", and it is not located in Oslo, but in a city called "Gol"

This is the church from Gol, but it was moved to Oslo (Christiania) in 1884, to be a part of King Oscar II's outdoor museum, now called Norsk folkemuseum (Norwegian folk museum).

You can read more about it here: www.norskfolkemuseum.no/en/Exhibits/The-Open- Air-Museum/O...

Gol does have it's own stavekirke now, which, bizarrely, is a copy of this one, that was built in the 1990s.

They were bulid to float like viking shops, only upside down! At least the tale tells this. And that would be the reason for the shape of the roof. Flip the church upside down, and it should, according to the tale, be a boat.

So. What is the origin of the name Stave church?
Well if you go inside one (there are replicas of this praticular church in the US; at Disney's E.P.C.O.T . Center, FL and various parts of Norway as previousely stated) you will find the construction is made of four or more staves. Read mor at Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stave_church.

Here is a photo of the Gol stave church in Norsk Folkemuseum in Oslo, from the other (front) side. I took it in July 1993.

The "Gols" tag is misleading, in English it would be spelled "Gol's".

First time I hear that Gol stavkirke at Norsk Folkemuseum is a replica of Borgund. I don't think its correct. By the way, in Gol they have maid a replica of "their" stave-church since the original can't be returned from the museum at Bygdøy, Oslo.
