      His hat insignia is reversed. I finally looked it up, and the reversal of the image was just the way a tintype or ambrotype worked: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tintype

      The hat says "B 44".
      Perhaps he was part of 44th regiment (state/branch unknown), B-company.

      There is probably someone out there who knows which state 44th regiment wore this type of hat - unless of course, it was one of a kind.
