      His regiment apparently was only constituted for a year, taking part in sieges of Confederate port towns in '63. There's a brief history of the 15th NHV on wikipedia.

      If you can find any more photos of the men listed above, you may be able to rule out some names and eventually get your man! (Looks like Samuel Mitchell, McClure and George are ruled out, there are pics of them there!) 3 down, 4 to go!

      It is actually a forage cap which is a derivative of the kepi, which was also popular. French fashion, especially with the military, was the norm for this period.
