My father (who grew up in Brockton in the 40s) thinks that looks like Flaggs Pond - Forest Ave & Belmont St. Were Asiaf Ice Rink currently is.

This looks like a pond in Rockland, near the Abington line (not far from Brockton). It borders Rt 123 (aka Market St in Rockland). Kids still play ice hockey there.

They had color photography in 1914?

  8. The Library of Congress (57 months ago | reply)

juan.pablo44: Actually, 1914 refers to the year when the photographer, Jack Delano, was born. The date of the photo appears on the third line down: "1940 Dec. " For more information about these color photographs by the Farm Security Administration, see: lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/fsacabt.html

does anyone know the emulsion of this picture? Perhaps Kodachrome? does the LOC perhaps have any images that also include notes about the exposure settings used?

The absolute best part of winter. Sadly the prolonged hard freeze kind of disappeared in my home town in the 90s. Now the only safe places to skate tend to be park district rinks with coils under them, not lakes or flooded fields where hockey is allowed and skating is free.

This looks like an area we used to call the "Muck" on the north side of Brockton. I'll have to research further.
