Those aren't water towers in the background, those are silos.

  3. mainja (61 months ago | reply)

This is true, but I can't find anywhere that they are referred to as water towers...

  4. MaureenShaughnessy (61 months ago | reply)

could it be the one on the right with the ladder is a water tower and the left is a silo?

mainja, the water tower reference is in the tags

  5. celticstoneman (61 months ago | reply)

My guess is that they both are silage towers. No water at all.

  6. Prairie Bluestem (61 months ago | reply)

The one at left may have been a corn crib or some other sort of granary.

These are almost certainly silos. Water towers wouldn't be needed in Ct and corn cribs would have slotted sides, to allow for drying [such as two in Simsbury, Ct., still used for corn a few years ago.]

Corn cribs have slotted sides to allow airflow. Water towers where never needed here in CT on farms. Those are old silos. The stairs allowed access to the top of the silo when it was filled

I believe that this is a farm on the east side of town that no longer exists.

This is more than likely the Singer Family barn (as in Singer Sewing). My Mother remembers the grain silos very well and knew the barn and the property. My grandparents (and my mother) lived next door to the Singer Family (our property ran against theirs). My grandparents are in the foreground and attended the auction. What is being sold off are the tools. The cows left well before the tools were disseminated.

    Adriene Hughes:

Thank you for letting us know about your grandparents who are attending the auction shown in this picture and for the identification of the farm with the Singer family. We can add more details when we update the description. If you like, we can add your grandparents names too.
