- yeah this smokestack is purely phallic, not much utility in it's design cause there are clearly better shapes for dispersing heavy volumes of smoke. Why even have them - just release the smoke at ground level - not like it serves a purpose like the Washington Monument! - BookChief

I've always had a soft spot for chimneys like these. We had a bunch around here when I was growing up, but most have been knocked down due to safety issues.
Fascinating to see the chimneys in 1941 vs. the one in 2008!
