I like the way this scene is observed by the photographer. He is an outsider and obviously keeps his distance but the distance is physical, not emotional.

What also fascinates me, is the backdrop of floating letters on the stage truck 'canvas'.

I love the little kid playing nearby, unaware that these women were scorned by society.

What I find interesting is how looking at this photo, if you were not given the context, you might think it has been taken last week.
Unlike most of the photos from this era, there clothes are more like what we where today. Leather Jacket, jeans, even the 'girls' outfit is reminiscent of somethig I could or have seen girls whearing today.

I agree with tkksummers. When I first looked at this photo, I thought their attire was not much different from what we wear today. Even the hair. A lot a women today started wearing their hair with soft curls pulled to the side with a clip. It's funny to me how this was their "backstage" and that they probably performed just on the other side of that train car.

they couldn't have been that "scorned" if they were performing at a state fair. it's not a brothel.

I think these are some of the same women seen in this picture.

oh good spotting, you're right, the first two from the other photo are in this one.

The one in the middle with the pink and silver jacket intrigues me. I'd love to know her story.

I saw a hoochie coochie show in 1967 at the LaPorte County Fair in Indiana...to our surprise, the girls took off ALL their clothes and did some things on stage that should have caused the show to be shut down.....but, the show went on, to our surprise.

I love how the little boy is totally ignoring everything and just playing in the dirt.
