  • To gain control of his mother's finances, he had her committed to a psychiatric hospital in Batavia, Illinois in 1875. She was released after a three-month stay. The committal proceedings led to a profound estrangement between Lincoln and his mother, and they never reconciled. - Lady Miss L

    No resemblance to his father. Looking more closely, I feel he appears constrained, tightly reined in.

    A very nice looking fellow. At first glance I got a bit creeped out because he reminds me a bit of John Wilkes Booth.

    I am honored to place a comment on Flickr. This will probably be, for me at least, a once-in-a-lifetime commentary. I was born on February 12, 1943,...one hundred years after Robert Todd Lincoln's birth. For me, his father, Abraham, was endeared to myself and to countless millions of citizens, living or dead. The Bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln (1809-2009) will probably come and go with not too much fanfare, but his memory will endure forever. As Lincoln stood on the balcony of the front lawn of the White House...before throngs of Union Troops of the Potomac, those troops yelled out,"Father Abraham, we will preserve the Union." RIP, Father Abraham.

    There is certainly a resemblance to John Wilkes Booth. Of course, in his time Booth was considered one of the handsomest men in the United States...

    Very handsome!!! Did Robert Lincoln have any children? Are there any direct descendants of Lincoln?
    I know there is a Lincoln homestead in Berks County, Pennsylvania that Lincoln's grandfather or great-grandfather lived in in the early 1700s.
    From
    Wikipedia:
    On September 24, 1868, Robert Lincoln married the former Mary Eunice Harlan (September 25, 1846 - March 31, 1937), the daughter of Senator James Harlan and Ann Eliza Peck of Mount Pleasant, Iowa. They had two daughters and one son:

    * Mary "Mamie" Lincoln (October 15, 1869 - November 21, 1938)
    * Abraham Lincoln II (nicknamed "Jack") (August 14, 1873 - March 5, 1890)
    * Jessie Harlan Lincoln (November 6, 1875 - January 4, 1948)

    The last descendant of Abraham Lincoln, Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith, died in 1985.

    I've seen photos of Robert Lincoln's two daughters as older adults. They both had Marfan Syndrome, a Lincoln family genetic inheritance. In the photos I saw, they were both wearing 'Body Aids,' the earliest electric-powered prototypes of wearable high-powered hearing aids. Congenital hearing loss is one of the features of Marfan Syndrome.

    Dear friends,

    Would anyone know whether Robert Lincoln ever wrote an educational book by the title of "George Ready"? I remember reading part of a chidren book written (around 1865) by a Robert. O' Lincoln. I do not find much of any information about Lincoln's son and his legacy...
    Thank you for any comments.

    he was the one who committed Mary Todd to a mental institution after the assassination of his father.

  18. azartist37a (45 months ago | reply)

    Robert really was a very handsome man but very coldhearted. I can't get over how he treated his mom. Granted she may have had some mental problems (and even that's up for debate) but you don't try to commit your mama to a nuthouse. And as "Rod Serling" says, yeah it's believed Abe did have Marfan's syndrome. It's debatable but in my opinion, I mean hey, look at the guy. It's kinda obvious. And yes, you could see it in some of his descendants.

  19. forgetfulmare1 (45 months ago | reply)

    does anyone want to wager any guesses as to why Robert was 'coldhearted'? any clues? his childhood?

  20. azartist37a (45 months ago | reply)

    Oh, and as Leslie Clement says, yeah, lol, I'm glad he didn't inherit his dad's ears either. I see very little of his dad in his face. Maybe a LITTLE around his eyes and definitely his hairline. I see a lot of his mom in his face, especially the shape of his mouth.

    He very much resembled his mother in later life as well. See his wikipedia entry as Sect. of War under Garfield and Arthur.

    An amazing man-his story reminds me a bit of Caroline Kennedy,and the daughter of Marie Antionette-whose name I cant think of at this moment .All 3 were survivors of a ruling family- outliving siblings ,parents and dramatic times . As he got older Robert put on some weight-as most well to do gents of his time.He looked more like his mum.
