Ball Manufacturing of Muncie, Indiana, makers of the iconic Ball jar, used in home canning of fruits and vegetables for well over a century. The Ball brothers located their glass making company there due to the abundance of natural gas below ground, which is used in the glass making process. Since its founding, the factory has recruited workers from the rural areas of Kentucky, Tennessee, and the surrounding areas presumably because they would work for lower wages. I think that may account for the pipe smoking and gun toting seen in this photo.
The Ball brothers also put down the cash to start Ball State University in Muncie. Because their sister had been blackballed by an Ivy League sorority back east, one of their conditions of founding was that there be no national sororities affiliated with the campus, a policy which still stands.
