The Filson Historical Society in Louisville, Kentucky, is seeking a motivated and energetic individual to fill the position of Associate Curator of Special Collections. This individual will join the other members of the Filson's Special Collections Department in acquiring, preserving, describing and providing access to the Filson's nationally significant manuscript collection (approx. 1.8 million items), approx. 50,000 photographs and prints, museum items, and other special collections. The primary responsibilities of this position include arrangement and description of collections in a variety of formats, reference services, supervising of interns and volunteers, and technical services including work with the Filson's web 2.0 applications.
Required qualifications:
• ALA-accredited MLS with coursework in archives or special
collections librarianship or a Master's degree in U.S. History,
American Studies, or related discipline with coursework or
substantive experience in an archival, manuscript, special
collections, or museum repository or historical program
• 2-5 years of experience in archival work in a professional
setting with processing and reference services
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Knowledge of professional standards, specifically MARC,
DACS, EAD, and Library of Congress Subject Headings
• Ability to work effectively both independently and
collaboratively in a dynamic research environment
Preferred qualifications:
• Strong knowledge of United States history, particularly
that of Kentucky and the Ohio Valley
• Demonstrated abilities in professional writing
• Previous work with web 2.0 applications such as WordPress,
Flickr, Facebook, YouTube
• Familiarity with open source collection management systems
such as Archivists' Toolkit and Archon
• Supervisory experience
Compensation:
