Philip Levine

Poet Laureate of the United States (2011-2012) Philip Levine won the Pulitzer Prize in 1995 for “The Simple Truth.” Levine is well known for his poems about working-class Detroit, where he grew up and worked in its auto factories. His 1991 collection, “What Work Is,” won the National Book Award, as did his 1980 collection, “Ashes: Poems Old and New.” Levine is also a recipient of a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
