Comprises a group of field materials documenting T. Shatinian performing Armenian music on the blul on April 24, 1939, collected by Sidney Robertson Cowell in Fresno, California.
Recordings:"Mr. Shatinian says that the syrinx [blul] is the Armenian term for 'k'avoll,' but k'avoll is not in the Turkish dictionary. The instrument is a single pipe played vertically. He gets a vibrato by shaking the mouthpiece in and out of his mouth without removing it from his lips."
Sidney Robertson Cowell refers to the blul as the "syrinx."
Yellow song check-list notes: "This is a Kurdish shepherd's flute actually -- a single tube, so of course it is not a 'syrinx.' Used to signal the sheep who learn to go right of left, forward or back, according to what is played."
