Subscription Services
The Internet subscription services
described below are fee-based; they are freely available at the
Library of Congress, and at other institutions which have paid
to make them available to researchers working onsite. In order
to access these sites, a researcher must go to an institution (like
the Library of Congress) which subscribes to them, or subscribe
to the services themselves from home (which can be somewhat costly).
A list of selected free genealogy websites,
which are freely available to anyone with Internet access, is maintained
by the Local History and Genealogy Section.

| Ancestry Library Edition |
The site provides access to more than one and a half billion
names in over 4,000 databases. Key databases include digital
images of the U.S. Federal census, the New York Passenger Lists
from 1820-1891, the Civil War Collection, the American
Genealogical-Biographical Index, the Social Security
Death Index, and the Massachusetts Town Vital
Records Collection. |
| HeritageQuest Online |
A growing collection of research material for tracing family
history and American culture. The site contains digital images
of the U. S. Federal census; more than 25,000 family and local
histories in full image; the Periodical Source Index (a
comprehensive subject index to more than 6,500 genealogy and
local history periodicals); selected records from the Revolutionary
War Era Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files;
and records from the Freedman's Bank (1865-1874). |
| Accessible Archives |
Contains primary source material from 18th and 19th century
publications. Currently the data is full-text with no images.
Includes full-text of The Pennsylvania Gazette from
1728 to 1800. |
| New England Ancestors |
Resources and databases of the New England Historic Genealogical
Society. The site offers full text access to the New
England Historical and Genealogical Register from 1847
to 1994, genealogies, vital records of many New England towns,
military records, and church records. Although the emphasis
is on New England genealogy, other parts of the U. S. are represented. |

Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal,
and the Washington Post, dating back to their
first issues. |
