Featured Initiatives
A dynamic collaboration between the public and private sectors has enabled the Library of Congress to grow into a truly vital and active treasure house of knowledge and an even more awe-inspiring institution for future generations. The Library’s key initiatives are designed to, as Librarian of Congress James Billington states, “get the champagne out of the bottle,” and further human understanding and wisdom by sharing the unparalleled treasures of the Library with people everywhere.
This video profiles the Junior Fellows program and features the findings of the 2011 class of fellows.

Junior Fellows Summer Intern Program
Since 2004, the Library of Congress Junior Fellows Summer Intern program has offered undergraduate and graduate students insights into the environment and culture of the Library of Congress. Working with Library curators and specialists, interns explore and increase access to the institution’s unparalleled collections. Interns are exposed to a broad spectrum of library work: copyright, preservation, reference, and access standards. In the past, summer interns have identified hundreds of historical, literary, artistic, cinematic and musical gems representing the Library’s rich assets. The Library of Congress appreciates the generosity of the late Mrs. Jefferson Patterson and the James Madison Council for making the Summer Intern Program possible.

Civil War in American Memory
In November 2012, the Library of Congress will open an exhibition titled The Civil War in American Memory, as the centerpiece of its commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War. The exhibition will commemorate the sacrifices and accomplishments of those, in both the North and South, whose lives were lost or affected by the events of 1861-1865 and foster reflection on the ways that this country’s greatest military and political upheaval helped shape the people and nation we have become. The James Madison Council provided major funding to mount this unique exhibition.

World Digital Library
The Library of Congress is a key partner in the World Digital Library. This project will make free, multi-lingual primary materials available online from cultures around the world, including manuscripts, maps, rare books, musical scores, recordings, films, prints, photographs, and architectural drawings.
