U.S. Coast Guard's Curatorial Services Program
The Coast Guard Historical Artifact Collection
The U. S. Coast Guard’s rich heritage dates
back to 1790, with the establishment of the Revenue Marine. As one of the
first branches of the U.S. armed services, the Coast Guard has preserved a
small but representative historical collection that includes artifacts from
the U. S. Revenue Cutter Service, the Life-Saving Service, the Light House
Service, the Steamboat Inspection Service, and the Bureau of Marine
Inspection and Navigation, and later, the development of military aviation.
The Coast Guard's historical collection is stored at the Exhibit Center in
Forestville, Maryland. The collection contains more than 20,000
artifacts, models and works of art. The Curatorial Services program
has placed more than 1,700 Coast Guard artifacts on loan to 275 non-profit
organizations throughout the United States. The Coast Guard Museum and
the Curatorial Services program maintain climate-controlled storage
facilities for artifacts, models and artwork awaiting display.
