Mona Van Duyn
U.S. Poet Laureate, 1992-93 |
On June 15, 1992, Librarian of Congress James H. Billington
appointed Mona Van Duyn (1921-2004) to be the 11th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. The first female poet laureate, Van Duyn served one term as poet laureate, finishing her duties in May 1993.
A Contemporary Literary Criticism essay notes that "Van Duyn's verse reflects intense emotions and thoughts beneath a placid surface of domestic life. In strictly metered poems that often recount such mundane events as trips to the zoo, hospital visits, and grocery shopping, Van Duyn reveals a constant struggle with time and relationships."1
