Eligibility

The Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Summer Teacher Institutes are free and open to K-12 educators across all content areas, including teachers, librarians and media specialists, instructional technology specialists and administrators in public, charter, private or religiously affiliated schools, as well as home schooling parents. Educators are also encouraged to apply as a pair/team.

Guidelines and Prerequisites

  • Participants may only attend one session.
  • If you attended a Summer Institute in 2010 - 2012, you are ineligible for participation.
  • Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from an administrator or supervisor.
  • Participants will be required to bring a wireless enabled laptop in order to complete work at the Library.
  • Participants must be comfortable using the Internet for research and with integrating digitized resources into classroom activities.
  • The number of participants for each session is limited to 25.
  • Tuition and materials are provided at no cost to participants. Breakfast and lunch are also provided.
  • Participants will be responsible for transportation to and from the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. and any required overnight accommodations.
  • The program is 45 hours in length (36 hours on site at the Library and nine hours for researching/implementing a primary source activity in educational setting). Participants are required to submit a two-page final reflection and participate in a web meeting as post-Library work. For reference, please see 2012 syllabus.

NOTE: Applicant's short responses to two questions as well as a letter of support from a school administrator or supervisor are required as part of the application. You cannot save your application and return to it later. Please be prepared to answer the questions and submit the letter when you are ready to apply.

The two questions, to be addressed in 500 characters or less each are:

  • Why do you wish to participate in the Library of Congress Summer Teacher Institute?
  • How you plan to share what you learn at the Library of Congress Summer Teacher Institute with other educators?

Letters of support should describe the candidate's overall qualifications for this program, educational leadership, use of technology for teaching and learning, and any additional qualifications for participation in the 2013 Library of Congress Summer Teacher Institute.

References should be in Word (.doc / .docx) or text file (.txt) format, be under 2.0 MB and should be attached where prompted.

Participants will have the option of completing additional requirements to earn three graduate credits from George Mason University.
