AFS 10,515-10,547B3: Thirty-three discs containing Chippewa songs originally recorded on 258 cylinders at the Leech Lake, Red Lake, and White Earth Indian Reservations, Minnesota; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Washington, D.C., by Frances Densmore, 1907-10. AFC 1948/071: Alice C. Fletcher Collection of Chippewa Cylinder Recordings
Three four-inch cylinders recorded by Alice Cunningham Fletcher in Washington, D.C., on January 24, 1899. Fletcher recorded Swift Flying Feather (Gay-zhe-gwun-e-osh), a member of a Leech Lake (Minnesota) delegation to the capital. Fletcher gave the cylinders to Frances Densmore at some later time. Through Densmore, the cylinders were deposited in the National Archives, from which they were transferred to the Library of Congress in 1948.

AFC 1948/073: Frances Densmore Collection of Winnebago [Ho-Chunk] Cylinder Recordings
Sixty-five six-inch dictaphone cylinders and twenty-nine four-inch cylinders of Winnebago songs, recorded on Frances Densmore's various field trips to Wisconsin and at her home in Red Wing, Minnesota, between October 1927 and June 1932. Her unpublished manuscript of transcriptons and analysis of these recordings is in the National Anthropological Archives. The cylinders were transferred to the Library of Congress from the National Archives in 1948. (see Federal Cylinder Project catalog (vol. 2), pp. 247-305, for details on these recordings)

AFC 1954/003: Laura Miller Taylor Collection of Chippewa Cylinder Recordings
Twelve cylinders of Chippewa music among those collected by Laura and Ralph B. Miller (her first husband) of St. Louis, Missouri, probably in the course of their 1915 canoe trip between Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, and Duluth, Minnesota, with stops at the Wisconsin Chippewa reservations. Additional information and perhaps recordings were obtained during the summer of 1916 at Lac du Flambeau. The cylinders were transferred to the Library of Congress from the Detroit Public Library in 1954. [catalog record]

Six 10-inch tapes of songs and stories recorded primarily in the Los Angeles, California, area by Wayland D. Hand, D.K. Wilgus, and various UCLA students, 1956-60. The collection includes 40 pages of correspondence, lyrics, notes, transcripts, and song lists. Includes western folk songs and songs and lore of urban minority groups in California.

One 7-inch tape of a public ceremony honoring the Albert Woolson, 107-year old last surviving Union Army veteran, from Duluth, Minnesota. Featured are U.S. Grant III, Mayor George B. Johnson (Mayor of Duluth, Minnesota), C. Elmer Anderson (Governor of Minnesota), Kenneth P. Williams (Civil War historian, Indiana University), with messages read from President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Vice President Richard Nixon, and General Douglas MacArthur. Presented to the Library of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War by television station KDAL. Recorded August 9, 1954.

AFC 1986/022: Center for Applied Linguistics Collection
Fifty-nine 10-inch tapes of speech samples, linguistic interviews, oral histories, conversations, and excerpts from public speeches recorded at various locations in North America by various collectors, and compiled by the Center for Applied Linguistics for a project entitled "A Survey and Collection of American English Dialect Recordings." The collection includes fourteen linear inches of documentation, including an introduction and preface, a list of contents, content summaries, and transcripts. Two cassettes of instrumentals and songs by the Bjorngjeld family, recorded in Minnesota, November 1986, and Columbus, North Dakota, 1956-60. The collection includes a 2-page list of 63 instrumentals and songs, 11 pages of notes, and an article about the family.

AFS 24,363: One cassette containing ballads; bluegrass, country, gospel, and Scandinavian dance music; and a narrative. AFC 1995/011: Stephen Smith / "Song Catcher: Frances Densmore of Red Wing," Minnesota Public Radio Collection
One 10-inch tape of a radio program entitled "Song Catcher Frances Densmore of Red Wing," about Densmore's life and her recordings of North American Indian songs. Recorded by Stephen Smith for Minnesota Public Radio and broadcast November 26, 1994, on National Public Radio's program "All Things Considered." In 2005, Smith also contributed photocopies of approximately 500 pages of letters from Densmore to Charles Hofmann between 1941 and 1954, received from Hofmann's family.

AFC 1996/069: Larry Long / "Truck Driver's Life" Video Collection
The video entitled "Hauling Freight, No Fences: A Truck Driver's Life" portrays the life of Gerald Johanneck, a truck driver from southwest Minnesota, as told by Johanneck to children of Wabasso, Minnesota. Also included is a performance of "Hauling Freight, No Fences," composed by Long and performed by Long and the children of Wabasso. Recorded at Salmagundi Studio in Northfield, Minnesota, in 1995. Produced by Larry Long and Barry Kimm.

AFC 1997/011: Lands' End All-American Quilt Collection
Lands' End in cooperation with Good Housekeeping magazine sponsored quilt contests in 1992, 1994, and 1996. The collection,housed in 154 boxes, consists of visual images, entry blanks, and essays written by entrants, as well as Lands End administrative files and correspondence pertinent to the promotion of the contest. Approximately 13,100 entries for the three contests came from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. AFC 2000/001: Local Legacies Collection
Four hundred and five linear feet (approximately 90,000 manuscript pages, 475 sound recordings, 13,270 graphic materials, 335 electronic media, and 75 artifacts) of documentation of local festivals, fairs, parades, and other community-based events from each U.S. state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories and trusts. The Local Legacies Collection was donated through the efforts of individuals, organizations, and institutions asked to participate by members of Congress. AFC 2003/045: Minnesota Scandinavian Ensemble with Becky Weis concert and interview collection
Homegrown 2003 concert, dance and fiddle music from Minnesota
Collection consists of photographs and videorecording of the concert at the Library of Congress; program flyer and publicity materials, including biographical information on performers. The Minnesota Scandinavian Ensemble performs repertoire based in "old-time" dance or "gammledans" music, primarily waltzes, schottisches, and polkas. Elizabeth "Becky" Weis plays and teaches the older "bygdedans" music of the Norwegian hardanger fiddle and Swedish nyckleharpa (key fiddle). Philip Nusbaum interviewed Becky Weis, June 4, 2003; LeRoy Larson, leader of the Ensemble on June 5, 2003; Mel Brenden on May 6, 2003; and Art Bjorngjeld on June 23, 2003; the collection includes sound recordings of the interviews and brief tape logs.
