AFC 1943/018: Frances Densmore Collection of Chippewa Cylinder Recordings
Three hundred thirty-six 4-inch and 21 6-inch cylinders containing Chippewa songs recorded by Frances Densmore on one visit to Washington, D.C., and during 10 field trips to Red Lake, White Earth, Nett Lake, and Leech Lake in Minnesota, and to Lac du Flambeau in Wisconsin, between July 1907 and November 1910. Seventeen cylinders were gifts from Densmore to the Music Division of the Library of Congress in 1943 and 1944, but most of the cylinders were transferred from the National Archives in 1948, with additions from the Smithsonian Institution in 1979 and 1981. Included in the collection are the Sioux songs used by Chippewa singers in presenting a ceremonial drum to the Menominee community in 1910. [catalog record]

AFC 1947/009: Alanson Skinner Collection of Menominee Cylinder Recordings
Twenty-two 4-inch cylinders of Menominee songs recorded by Alanson Buck Skinner in June 1919 near Keshena, Wisconsin. The cylinders, primarily containing songs of the Medicine Ceremony (Mita'win), were received by exchange from the Milwaukee Public Museum in 1947. Skinner published texts and commentary on these songs in "Songs of the Menomini Medicine Ceremony," American Anthropologist n.s. 27 (1925): 290-314. (includes AFS 8904-8906) (LWO 5111 reels 159-160)

AFS 8440A1-8442A2; 8443; 8449B3-4; 8450-8451: Seven discs containing 29 Dutch songs sung by various persons from Crandon and Kenosha, Wisconsin. Includes songs in the Friesland dialect.

AFS 8445B1: One disc containing "The Newhall House Fire," sung by Mrs. Ella Mittelstaedt of Mayville, Wisconsin. The song is about a fire in Milwaukee witnessed by Mrs. Mittelstaedt in 1883.

AFS 8452-8453: Two discs containing 9 Polish songs sung by Miss Stasie Pokora of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

AFS 8454A2-8455B2: Two discs containing 7 songs in a Flemish or German dialect. Songs performed by Jacob C. Becker of Belgium, Wisconsin. They were learned from his father, Nicholas Becker, who came to Ozaukee County, Wisconsin from Luxembourg in 1854.

AFS 8456A1-8457B2: Two discs containing 7 Lithuanian songs performed by various members of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Twelve 16-inch discs of Hopi, Iroquois, Menominee, and Winnebago songs and spoken word. Originally recorded on wax cylinders loaned by the Milwaukee Public Museum. The collection includes 1/8 linear inch of correspondence and logs. Includes 23 Iroquois, 2 Winnebago songs.

AFC 1948/069: Frances Densmore Collection of Menominee Cylinder Recordings
Eighty-four four-inch and four six-inch cylinders collected by Frances Densmore on the Menominee reservation in Wisconsin during 1925 and 1928. Information on the recordings is contained within Densmore's monograph, _Menominee Music_ (Bureau of American Ethnology Bulletin 102, published in 1932). The cylinders were transferred from the National Archives in 1948. Songs from the collection were included in the record album produced by Densmore in 1952, "Songs of the Menominee, Mandan and Hidatsa" (Library of Congress, AFS L33). AFC 1948/073: Frances Densmore Collection of Winnebago [Ho-Chunk] Cylinder Recordings
Sixty-five 6-inch dictaphone cylinders and 29 4-inch cylinders of Winnebago songs, recorded on Frances Densmore's various field trips to Wisconsin and at her home in Red Wing, Minnesota, between October 1927 and June 1932. Her unpublished manuscript of transcriptons and analysis of these recordings is in the National Anthropological Archives. AFC 1954/003: Laura Miller Taylor Collection of Chippewa Cylinder Recordings
Twelve cylinders of Chippewa music among those collected by Laura and Ralph B. Miller (her first husband) of St. Louis, Missouri, probably in the course of their 1915 canoe trip between Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, and Duluth, Minnesota, with stops at the Wisconsin Chippewa reservations. Additional information and perhaps recordings were obtained during the summer of 1916 at Lac du Flambeau. AFC 1981/019: Nancy O. Lurie Collection of Winnebago Cylinder Documentation
Audio and written documentation assembled by Nancy O. Lurie in 1980-81 regarding the Frances Densmore and Paul Radin Winnebago cylinder recordings. Wilbur Blackdeer, Benjamin Winneshiek, Emanuel Thundercloud, and others provided comments on recordings Densmore had made in Wisconsin Winnebago communities between 1927 and 1932, and that Radin made in the Nebraska community between 1908 and 1912. Seven audiocassettes of part II of the radio series "Downhome Dairyland," hosted and produced by Jim Leary and Richard March, presented by the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Wisconsin Folk Museum, and broadcast weekly March 4-May 27, 1990. The collection includes eight pages of a brochure, correspondence, datasheets, and an inventory. The radio series entitled "Down Home Dairyland," a program of traditional and ethnic music of Wisconsin and Michigan, hosted and produced by folklorists Jim Leary and Richard March; presented by Wisconsin Arts Board and the Wisconsin Folk Museum. Includes performances and interviews, as well as older recordings. Also includes American Indian, Swiss, Polish, French, German, Puerto Rican, and Asian traditions; also fiddling, polka, instrument building, and library and museum collections. Lands' End in cooperation with Good Housekeeping magazine sponsored quilt contests in 1992, 1994, and 1996. The collection,housed in 154 boxes, consists of visual images, entry blanks, and essays written by entrants, as well as Lands End administrative files and correspondence pertinent to the promotion of the contest. Approximately 13,100 entries for the three contests came from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. AFC 2000/001: Local Legacies Collection
Four hundred and five linear feet (approximately 90,000 manuscript pages, 475 sound recordings, 13,270 graphic materials, 335 electronic media, and 75 artifacts) of documentation of local festivals, fairs, parades, and other community-based events from each U.S. state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories and trusts. The Local Legacies Collection was donated through the efforts of individuals, organizations, and institutions asked to participate by members of Congress.
