Rights and Restrictions Information

Images gathered by the Encyclopedia Britannica in the course of illustrating the
Britannica Book of the Year for 1949-54 were given by the Encyclopedia Britannica to the
Library in 1954 and 1956. Each image was stamped "Gift of Encyclopedia Britannica" and then
filed in the Specific Subject File under an appropriate heading. The caption for each photograph
includes the source of the image. Patrons wishing to publish or otherwise distribute these
images must conduct item-specific assessments of the rights which may be associated with the
individual pieces.

Access: Permitted; subject to P&P policy on serving originals.

Reproduction (photocopying, hand-held camera copying, photoduplication and other forms of copying allowed by "fair use"): Permitted; subject to P&P policy on copying.

Publication and other forms of distribution: May be restricted. Patrons wishing to publish or
otherwise distribute these images must conduct item-specific assessments of the rights which
may be associated with individual pieces. The Division's reference aid, "General Information

use of a photograph given by the Britannica. Please note the following:

• Wire service, professional photographer, studio, publicity, or other photographs and
  original artwork from commercial sources dating 1923 and after may be restricted by
  copyright and patrons are advised to check for copyright prior to publication or other
  forms of distribution. The commercial status of these images can be recognized by the
  appearance of the name of a photographer or studio on the image, e.g., Lotte Jacobi,
  Columbia Pictures. The addresses of such parties, and an indication of the status of their
  works (to the extent known by the Library) are provided in the Rights and Restrictions
  Information page found online on the Prints and Photographs Reading Room homepage
  at http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/ under the artist's or company's name.
