About the Harris & Ewing Collection

\r\n\r\n

The Harris & Ewing Collection of photographic\r\n negatives includes glass and film negatives taken by Harris\r\n & Ewing, Inc., which photographed people, events, and\r\n architecture, particularly in Washington, D.C., during the\r\n period 1905-1945. Harris & Ewing, Inc., gave its\r\n collection of negatives to the Library in 1955.

\r\n\r\n

Available online are a growing proportion of the glass\r\n negatives - a subset of the approximately 50,000 news\r\n photographs and 20,000 studio portraits of notable people\r\n in the collection. Titles for the images are taken from\r\n unverified caption data received with the collection. When\r\n no caption data was received, the title says "NO\r\n CAPTION."

Digitizing is finished for the following glass negative \r\n\t\tseries -- LC-H22 (4x5 inch); -H261 (5x7 inch); and -H25 \r\n\t\t(8x10 inch). Digitizing is expected to resume in 2011, \r\n\t\tto scan the remaining 14,000 4x5-inch images and the 3,000 \r\n\t\t5x7 inch-images in series LC-H2, -H21, -H23, and -H234.\r\n\t\t
