Viral Hepatitis Education and Training Projects

In 2008, the Division of Viral Hepatitis announced and competed a new four part cooperative agreement for Networking, Education, and Training. The following six organizations were awarded cooperative agreements from CDC for the following:

Part A: Networking, Partnership, and Information Dissemination
Part B: Health Education Program
Part C: Diffusion of Effective Programs
Part D: Professional Education

Hepatitis Networking, Partnership and Information Dissemination

National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors is funded under Part A for Networking, Partnership and Information Dissemination. The purpose of this project is to build and sustain strong partnerships and maintain strategic alliances to speak with a collective voice on issues affecting viral hepatitis prevention programs, practices and policies. The project will enhance existing communication networks by regularly disseminating information, education, training, policy, resource directory [PDF - 17 pages], and other materials on viral hepatitis. It will promote awareness of the burden of viral hepatitis among the media as well as opinion leaders, employers, health care organizations and others who influence public policy and service delivery.

Centerforce HCV Prevention Project

Centerforce is funded under Part B for Health Education Programs. Centerforce coordinates peer-based health education programs at three of the 33 prisons in California—Central California Women’s Facility, Valley State Prison for Women, and San Quentin State Prison. Through this funding, Centerforce trains, supervises, and supports incarcerated individuals to provide health education regarding Hepatitis A, B, and C to other people who are currently incarcerated. Utilizing a separate funding mechanism, Centerforce is also able to incorporate health education on HIV and STDs into the peer-based program. The goals of this program are to: increase knowledge about Hepatitis A, B, C prevalence, transmission, and prevention; increase Hepatitis A/B vaccination and Hepatitis C testing rates; increase support and knowledge among those identified as Hepatitis C infected; and decrease Hepatitis C-related transmission behaviors.

Hepatitis Education and Prevention Program Model Diffusion

Asian Health Coalition is funded under Part C for Diffusion of Effective Programs. The Hepatitis Education and Prevention Program (HEPP) targets underserved and at-risk Asian American & Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in Illinois. The success of HEPP lies in a multi-tiered strategy of community-based partnerships, the community health worker model, also known as the lay health advisor model, academic institutional support, and public health system integration. A program manual is now being created to capture the agency’s experience in the implementation of HEPP, and provide tips and lessons learned for organizations interested in initiating similar projects in other indigent communities nationwide.

UFO Presents!

UFO Presents! is funded under Part C for Diffusion of Effective Programs. UFO Presents! is developing a Replication Manual for the UFO Model, an HCV prevention and education program for young adult IDU. The UFO Model is based on over 14 years of research and service with young adult IDU at the University of California, San Francisco. The UFO Model is a multi-level intervention that works on the individual level (outreach, counseling and testing, immunizations and referrals), group level (8-week hepatitis prevention education group), and community level (drop-in center, Resource Manual and linkages to youth-specific primary health care, drug treatment programs, STD/HIV testing). The Replication Manual includes facilitator guides, protocols, sample documents and background research. It gives tips and guidance on specific needs and issues that arise when working closely with young IDU and community partners. We are developing training and technical assistance products to assist agencies interested in implementing the UFO Model across the US.

The National Training Center for Integrating Hepatitis into HIV/STD Prevention Services

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is funded under Part D for Professional Education. The National Training Center provides practice-focused distance learning opportunities for frontline workers in community based organizations and clinics on viral hepatitis prevention, diagnosis, management, treatment and integration. Hepatitis Web Study

The University of Washington is funded under part D for Professional Education. Hepatitis Web Study is designed for health care workers who provide clinical care to persons with viral hepatitis. This site features over 20 interactive, clinically-relevant case studies, each with a discussion, high quality illustrations and graphics, and references/links that highlight and illustrate key recommendations from national guidelines. Free continuing education credits, including an easy way to print CME/CNE documentation and an electronic CE tracker are available.
