The Panoramic Photograph Collection contains approximately four \r\nthousand images featuring American \r\ncityscapes, \r\nlandscapes, \r\nand group portraits. \r\nThese panoramas offer an overview of the nation, its enterprises and \r\nits interests, with a focus on the start of the twentieth century \r\nwhen the panoramic photo format was at the height of its popularity. \r\nSubject strengths include: \r\nagricultural life; \r\nbeauty contests; \r\n disasters;\r\n engineering work such as bridges,\r\n canals and \r\n dams; \r\n fairs and \r\n expositions; \r\n military \r\n and naval activities,\r\n especially during World War I; the oil \r\n industry; schools \r\n and college \r\n campuses, \r\n sports, \r\n and transportation. \r\n (For a presentation highlighting panoramic photographs relating to \r\n particular cities and disasters, see the American Memory gallery site, \r\n Selected Panoramic Photographs.) \r\n The images date from 1851 to 1991 and depict scenes in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. \r\n More than twenty foreign countries and a few U.S. territories are also\r\n represented. These panoramas average between twenty-eight inches and \r\n\tsix feet in length, with an average width of ten inches.
