Resources for Manufacturers of Currency Handling and/or Denominating Equipment

The information on this page applies to two unique industries:

  1. Banknote Equipment Manufacturer (BEM) - a company that produces any type of equipment that handles banknotes for commercial purposes, which includes but is not limited to, point of sale, counting and sorting, transit systems, vending, gaming, and note validating and dispensing in commercial banking environments.
  2. Currency Reader Manufacturer (CRM) - a company that produces a product or service commercially available and designed for the purpose of denominating US currency by an individual.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) intends to assist manufacturers in getting their devices ready to accept newly designed U.S. currency.  To prepare for system updates, the U.S. government intends to issue samples of new notes in advance of the new notes being issued to the public. If your firm would like to receive sample notes, but your company is not currently an approved BEM or CRM, please review the application procedures that apply to your company by clicking on one of the options below:

  1. BEM application procedures
  2. CRM application procedures

In addition to new notes available through BEP, counterfeit notes and genuine notes of varying degrees of fitness are available for testing purposes through the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond's Currency Technology Office (CTO). For more information about this program, email the CTO at
