The Quarterly Coal Report (QCR) provides detailed quarterly data on U.S. coal production, exports, imports, receipts, prices, consumption, and coal quality and stocks. Data on U.S. coke production, consumption, stocks, imports, and exports are also provided. All data for 2011 and prior years are final. All data for 2012 are preliminary.
Highlights for third quarter 2012:
- U.S. coal production during the third quarter 2012 totaled 259.0 million short tons (mmst). This was 7.3 percent higher than the previous quarter and 5.8 percent lower than the third quarter 2011. The most significant increase was in the State of Wyoming, where production rose by 21.0 percent from second quarter 2012.
- U.S. coal exports totaled 31.6 mmst, 15.9 percent lower than second quarter 2012 and up 21.5 percent from third quarter 2011 level. U.S. steam coal exports totaled 14.6 mmst, 16.0 percent lower than the prior quarter. U.S. metallurgical coal exports totaled 17.0 mmst, 15.8 percent below the second quarter 2012 level.
- U.S. coal imports totaled 2.4 mmst in third quarter 2012. Imports increased by 3.7 percent from second quarter 2012, but decreased 32.7 percent from third quarter 2011.
- Total U.S. consumption was 254.0 mmst for the third quarter 2012. This was 25.8 percent higher than in the second quarter 2012 and down 9.2 percent from the third quarter 2011 level.
- Total U.S. stocks declined to 235.3 mmst from 255.1 mmst in the second quarter 2012, an 8.9 percent drop. However, this was 17.2 percent higher than in the third quarter 2011.
