General Brooke was ordered to land at the southeast port of Arroyo after stopping in Ponce, 45 miles west, and his troops disembarked from the 3rd to the 5th of August. General Hains' troops took Guayama on the way, with four Americans wounded. On the morning of the August 13, General Hains' advance on Cayey was halted by the announcement of the signing of peace protocols.
