This stunning ornament is a replica of the handsome Art Deco owl that keeps watch over a reading room in the John Adams Building on the Library campus. The owl, an ancient symbol of learning and wisdom, appears often in the decorations at the Library of Congress, especially in the Adams Building. Opened to the public on January 3, 1939, as the Library of Congress Annex, the building has a distinct Art Deco style and was designed to hold ten million volumes. In 1980 it was renamed for the second president of the United States, who on April,24, 1800 signed legislation establishing the Library. 2.5" x 1.5" with blue ribbon and embossed presentation box.
