The Library of Congress has been shaped primarily by the philosophy and ideals of its principal founder, Thomas Jefferson, who sold his personal library of more than six thousand volumes to Congress to "recommence" its library after its destruction in 1814. Carol Highsmith, the distinguished photographer, has comprehensively photographed the interior of the Thomas Jefferson building and along with much of her other work, has donated them to the Library of Congress.
