About the National Sampler Project
The American Folklife Center's holdings of materials from individual states are so extensive that exploration of them can be challenging. To provide an introductory tour for Library of Congress patrons, educators, researchers, and the general public — and to display some of the wonderful audio and visual treasures amassed over the past eight decades — the Center is undertaking the online National Sampler Project. The project provides an enhancement of the Center's popular Folklife in Your State feature that gives general information about the Center's activities and holdings for each American state and territory.
The National Sampler Project uses recent improvements in online speed and accessibility to add new dimensions, such as audio and video clips, photographs, orientation texts, updated finding aids, and links to relevant online materials. This project is a long-term initiative that will ultimately add materials for every state and territory.
Each National Sampler Project offering reflects only a fraction the American Folklife Center's archival holding for states and territories. Nevertheless, we hope it will provide a road map that encourages visitors from across the globe to explore America's local cultural traditions and to enrich their understanding of the United States of America.
