The Caucasus and Central Asia, 2009

This guide focuses on the socioeconomic development of the Central Asia countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan) particularly as these economies have been impacted by the rise of China's modern economy. The macroeconomic reforms initiated under Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in the late 1970s have culminated in a modern socialist market system in China with strong ties to the neighboring Central Asian countries.
