Hall of Composers
Russell Alexander (1877-1915)
Russell Alexander is known as one of the foremost composers of marches; he often is mentioned alongside John Philip Sousa, Karl King, and Charlie Duble.
Alexander performed baritone with, and arranged music for, the Barnum and Bailey Band during a 5 five-year tour from 1897-1902. Following the tour, Alexander teamed up with his brothers, Newton and Woodruff, and their collaborator James Brady to form a musical act called “Exposition Four.” Due to his extensive experience on baritone, Alexander wrote many parts for the instrument. Selected works include ”Colossus of Columbia” (1901) and ”The Southerner” (1913).
