I rather doubt that this is a Union Captain. The uniform is obviously a homemade, the side pocket and trim being the giveaway. Confederate officers routinely used Union rank insignia when their own was either unavailable or unaffordable

I dont think that "I rather doubt that this is a Union Captain. The uniform is obviously a homemade, the side pocket and trim being the giveaway. Confederate officers routinely used Union rank insignia when their own was either unavailable or unaffordable" this effects the importance of the image..

If this is true I don't care & it makes the photo even more touching.

Even with all the 'right info' we still see so little of their lives & time.

Thank you for your observation. It is indeed possible this is a Confederate soldier wearing a Union captain's uniform, which is why the title makes sure to separate the soldier (i.e. 'unidentified soldier') from the uniform (i.e. 'in Union captain's uniform'). It's fair to say the uniform is that of a Union captain, but not so easily determined if the man wearing it is a captain himself!

It looks as if this very young man has a smooth chin and cheeks, but a shadow on his upper lip. Trying to grow a mustache?

I did not say it was a Union Captain's Uniform. I made the point those were Federal Insignia which were often used by Confederate officers. The uniform is Waaaay out of regulation and apparently home made, also very out of character for a Federal officer of tht rank
