Veterans History Project and Department of Defense Collaborate on Korean War 60th Anniversary Commemoration Film Screening, Book Talk A viewing and discussion on "Ship of Miracles," the story of the 1950 Korean War merchant ship rescue, which historians have deemed the greatest sea rescue in the history of mankind. During an intense military battle, the S.S. Meredith Victory, designed to carry no more than 12 passengers aside from a crew of 47, rescued 14,000 North Korean refugees and carried them to safety in a single, three-day voyage.

Veterans History Project Recognizes Vietnam Veterans with Web Feature Fifty years later, the Vietnam War remains part of the nation’s collective consciousness. For the veterans who served during this era, this conflict has particular meaning. The Veterans History Project (VHP) has launched the latest installment in its Experiencing War website presentation, titled "Vietnam War: Looking Back, Part 1." The website feature, one of 37 created thus far, highlights the wartime stories of veterans who served during the Vietnam War.

Veterans History Project Hosts Arts, Military + Healing Closing Event Collects Stories of Veterans Through Performance Workshops The Veterans History Project (VHP) will host the closing event of a weeklong initiative to promote creativity, wellness and resiliency in military communities on Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m. in the Coolidge Auditorium of the Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building, located at 10 First St., S.E., Washington, D.C. The program features staged readings of excerpts from author Kate Wenner’s play, "Make Sure It’s Me," based on her interviews with Iraq war veterans who sustained life-changing traumatic brain injuries. VHP Director Bob Patrick will accept into the Library of Congress collection veterans’ stories recorded as part of "The Telling Project" workshops. Togo D. West, Jr., former Secretary of Veterans Affairs and Former Secretary of the Army, will offer remarks.

Women Veterans of the Persian Gulf War Subject of Panel Discussion The Library of Congress Veterans History Project (VHP) will commemorate Women’s History Month with a landmark panel discussion on the contributions of women to the Persian Gulf War and the impact on women veterans in the more than 20 years since on Tuesday, March 27 at noon in the Whittall Pavilion, located on the ground floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St., S.E., Washington, D.C.

VHP Military Photography The Library of Congress Veterans History Project has launched 'Military Photographers: Framing the Shot,' which presents the accounts of 15 veterans who photographed the defining conflicts of the 20th and 21st centuries.

VHP Collects Vietnam Stories The Library of Congress Veterans History Project (VHP) has launched a multi-year campaign to preserve the stories of the nation’s Vietnam War veterans. The stories of former Sen. Chuck Hagel and his brother Tom Hagel, who fought side by side in the 9th Infantry Division in the Mekong River Delta, are among the more than 13,000 Vietnam veteran collections already held by VHP. The brothers recently ushered in VHP’s new campaign by donating more than 20 hours of interviews and film footage to the Library. Originally collected by Nebraska Educational Telecommunications (NET), representatives from NET were on hand to commemorate the donation.

VHP Marks 70th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor The Veterans History Project has launched 'Pearl Harbor – 70th Anniversary,' which is the 35th website feature in the Experiencing War series.

VHP Make it Meaningful Initiative November 8, 2011 The Veterans History Project celebrates Veterans Day 2011 as an opportunity to make the holiday more meaningful by recognizing veterans in the workplace through the Make it Meaningful Initiative.

VHP Hosts Filmscreening, Panel discussion and Honors Naval Aviator The Veterans History Project commemorates the July 26, 1948 anniversary of the integration of the U.S. Armed Forces and the Centennial of Naval Aviation with a film screening and panel discussion honoring Ensign Jesse Leroy Brown, the nation’s first African American to be trained as an aviator for the Navy, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at the U.S. Navy Memorial Burke Theater.

Veterans History Project Stories Highlighted on Itunes U Apple’s iTunes U now features the Library of Congress Veterans History Project (VHP), part of the Library’s ongoing commitment to make VHP collections and array of instructional materials and primary-source materials freely accessible in digital format. Veterans History Project Marks Milestone, Digitzes 10,000 collection
VHP reached a major milestone as it begins its second decade of collecting, preserving and sharing the first-person recollections of U.S. war veterans. Now, 10,000 of its more than 75,000 collections are digitized at www.loc.gov/vets/, making these recorded interviews, photographs, letters and other historical documents fully accessible to anyone with Internet access. "Our digitization process is ongoing. We hope to digitize thousands more in the coming years, making more collections accessible to the American people and the world," said Veterans History Project Director Bob Patrick. "These stories run the gamut from tragic to heartwarming and from funny to harrowing – there’s something for everyone.

Veterans History Project Spotlights Vets of the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine "They Also Served," is a website feature that comprises a dozen first-person accounts of those who went to sea to transport troops, deliver vital supplies, protect our shores, and patrol enemy waters. "The service and sacrifice of the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine veterans are often overlooked," said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. "Having their recollections among the over 65,000 individual stories in the VHP collection enriches our archive for researchers and scholars, and these personal accounts are never forgotten."
