The Asian Reading Room is the primary access point for researchers seeking to use the Asian Division's collections at the Library of Congress. These collections include materials in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan and Mongolian, as well as materials from the South Asian subcontinent, the nations of Southeast Asia, and from Asian-American Pacific islands. With over three million books, periodicals and newspapers, a large number of manuscripts, and electronic media, the collections are the most comprehensive sources of Asian language materials outside Asia. The division’s area specialists and reference librarians provide in-depth reference assistance on questions concerning Asia. Western language materials about Asia are part of the general collections and can be requested in either the Asian Reading Room or the Main
Reading Room.
Although the Asian Division Reading Room is not open to the public on Saturdays, Asian language materials requested two days in advance by patrons via asianrequest@loc.gov for use on Saturday will be made available in the Main Reading Room which is open on Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
