Photographs of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States are indelible records of the terrible tragedy that struck our nation that day. Photojournalists at the scene risked their lives to document the destruction of buildings, the enveloping chaos, and the heroism of the firemen, police, and emergency medical workers who searched the rubble for survivors. The Prints and Photographs Division has acquired an important collection of images taken by news photographers who covered the cataclysmic events at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Five photojournalists represented in the collection discuss their work on 9/11, its use in the media, and their personal reactions to capturing history.
