Scholarly Programs

The Center provides a forum for the support of scholarly examination and discovery within the collections, promoting research, writing, and teaching in the subjects of architecture, design, and engineering.

Scholarly programs include lectures and symposia, sometimes in conjunction with exhibitions, but always focusing on the Library's collections and their significance, and advancing their preservation and accessibility. New research and writing will be encouraged through a program of fellowships and publication and research grants for student interns, scholars, and the Library's own professional staff.

In 2007, the Library hosted the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation Fellowship, which will help highlight the work of women architects represented in the Library’s collections. For further information, please view the press release.

Exhibitions

The Center will sponsor a series of distinguished exhibitions, with related publications, symposia, lectures, and special projects to advance the accessibility and appreciation of the Library's preeminent collections in architecture, design, and engineering. Periodic major traveling exhibitions and smaller in-house exhibitions will place the collections in the public eye in order to attract interest and support for their processing and preservation.

To accompany exhibitions, the Center will sponsor publications ranging from printed and electronic checklists to illustrated catalogues and fascimile editions representing entire collections and parts thereof.

Three award-winning exhibitions, including published catalogs and continuing on-line versions, have served as models of what the Center is intended to accomplish:

• Temple of Liberty : Building the Capitol for a New Nation (1995)
• Frank Lloyd Wright: Designs for an American Landscape, 1922-1932 (1996-1997)
• The Work of Charles and Ray Eames : A Legacy of Invention (1999- present)

The Center will foster cooperation among other institutions and organizations sharing related collections and common goals.
