JOHN CAGE CENTENNIAL
A CAGE FILM CIRCUS, presented as part of the John Cage Centennial Festival, Washington, DCCome at the beginning, take a break for lunch or coffee in our cafeteria and return, or come in the middle and stay through the end. Seating is limited to 64, available on a first-come, first-served basis; no tickets or reservations are required.

The American premiere of Henning Lohner’s riotous Musicircus film, a three-and-a-half-hour
documentary of the “Musicircus” homage to John Cage, presented at New York’s Symphony
Space shortly after his death in 1992. Preceding and following it, the haunting Beach Birds for
Camera, directed by Elliot Caplan. His 28-minute film is an adaptation of a dance work originally
made for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, combining different shooting locations, and black and white and color film.

HILL CENTER at the OLD NAVAL HOSPITAL
This season the Music Division embarks on a pilot program of music-related films and discussions staged, for the first time, at the Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital on Capitol Hill. Built in 1866 to treat wounded Civil War sailors and marines, the Center is now a lively community hub for activities and programs of all kinds. Enjoy a glass of wine with performers and presenters and stroll the handsome grounds, just down the street from the Library.

The Library’s Jazz Film Series moves to the Hill Center, presenting great programs from the pioneering television series. “The !!!! Beat: Legendary R&B and Soul Shows from 1966.” Shot at WFAA in Dallas, Texas and hosted by radio d.j. William “Hoss” Allen, “The !!!! Beat” ran for 26 episodes with stellar performances by national and regional stars, along with a rocking house band and go-go dancers.
SEPTEMBER 7: VOLUME ONE includes performances by Little Milton, Frank Howard & the Commanders, Esther Phillips, Gatemouth Brown, Joe Tex, Etta James, Lattimore Brown, Roscoe Shelton, Lee “Shot” Williams & Gerri Taylor, Carla Thomas, Art Grayson, Cleo Randle, Mighty Joe Young and Jimmy Church.
SEPTEMBER 14: VOLUME TWO includes performances by Jimmy Church, Freddie King, Gatemouth Brown, Gerri Taylor, Frank Howard & the Commanders, Barbara Lynn, The Kelly Brothers, Mighty Joe Young, Art Grayson, The Beat Boys, Joe Tex, Freddie King, The Carnations, Little Gary Ferguson, Johnny Jones and Charles “Charlie” Hodges.
SEPTEMBER 21: VOLUME FOUR includes performances by Freddie King, Martin, Maurice & The Radiants, The Beat Boys, The Poppies, Lee Watson & The Panthers, Johnnie Jones, Freddie King, Louis Jordan & The Tympany Five, Gatemouth Brown, Clarence “Frogman” Henry, Gwen Davis, Robert Parker, Jimmy Church, Lattimore Brown, Joe Simon, Mamie Galore and Jamo Thomas.
