Manjushree Thapa, born in Kathmandu in 1968, is a well known, highly acclaimed new generation writer in Nepal. She studied in St. Mary's School (Kathmandu), the National Cathedral School (Washington, DC) and the Rhode Island School of Design, where she majored in photography. She has an M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Washington, which she attended on a Fulbright scholarship.

Her first book, Mustang Bhot in Fragments, was a travelogue published in Nepal in 1992. Her short stories have been published in the Bellingham Review, Tampa Review, Artful Dodge, Himal South Asian, and elsewhere.

Her novel, The Tutor of History, the first major novel in English to emerge from Nepal, is a portrait of a society in change that is ultimately a story of idealism, alienation and love. Manjushree Thapa portrays the human lives and relationships that bear the uniqueness of an archetypal Nepali village.

Manjushree Thapa lives in Kathmandu, where she helps to manage Martin Chautari, a center for public interest and advocacy. She writes regularly in the print media in Nepal (The Nepali Times) and also translates Nepali literature into English. She has also published a book of translated short stories of the Nepali writer Ramesh Vikal, A Leaf in a Begging Bowl. Her recent publication Forget Kathmandu: An Elegy for Democracy is an unprecedented examination of Nepal's past and present and is one of the finest works of non-fiction from the subcontinent in recent times.
