His first collection of short stories met with acclaim with critics saying, "a new star has been born in the firmament of Sinhalese literature." Honoring his contribution to Sri Lanka scholarship, Suraweera has been conferred the honorific title of Kalakeerthi.

Suraweera is a scholar writer turned politician. He presently serves as the Director General of the Central Cultural Fund and was earlier Deputy Minister of Culture and Religious Affairs.
