Sivasankari, born in 1942 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu is a popular Tamil writer and activist. Her writings examine crisis situations in society and in personal lives in the face of a fast-changing world. She looks at tradition with a lot of nostalgia and warmth, without loosing sight of the evils that it nurtured. Sivasankari is exceptionally sensitive to the issues that confront contemporary society and is comfortable with her occasionally conflicting selves as a writer and an activist. Her novel Oru Manithanin Kathai about a drunkard and his plight, made her famous overnight and endeared her to Tamil readers. It was subsequently made into a tele-serial. She has thirty novels, thirteen travelogs and one hundred and fifty short stories to her credit. Many of them have been translated into English and other languages. Her ambitious project "Knit India Through Literature" has attracted national attention and is receiving the support of the Sahitya Akademi. The project, expected to be completed in four volumes, is a sincere effort to link Indians by bringing out the common threads that unite Indian literature written in various languages. Through this project she aims at substantiating through literature the idea of unity in diversity.

Among her works Oru Manithanin Kathai, Avan, Nandu, Verillatha Marangal, Amma Conna Kathaikal are considered the best. She is a recipient of numerous awards such as Kasturi Srinivasan Award in 1983; Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiyar Award in 1988; Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award in 1990 and Tamil Annai Award.
