AFC 1950/017: National Folk Festival, 1938
One 12-inch and 39 16-inch discs of instrumentals, songs, dance music, and folk dancing (Morris dance, sword dance, square dance, and social dances) performed by Scottish, American Indian, Spanish American, Anglo-American, African American, and Pennsylvania Dutch performers. Includes folk songs, ballads, fiddle tunes, coal miner's songs and music from Pennsylvania; cowboy songs; sea songs; Chinese music; Turkish music; Slavonic tamburitza music; Bach chorales; orchestral music; interviews; and lectures performed during the National Folk Festival in Washington, D.C. from May 6-8, 1938. Also includes a radio air check on United States foreign policy and defense; and several other radio programs not recorded at the National Folk Festival, including a WPA-sponsored program featuring the Prince George High School orchestra. AFC 1972/003: Jesse Walter Fewkes Passamaquoddy Cylinder Collection
Thirty-one four-inch cylinders of Passamaquoddy songs and spoken word and subsequent demonstrations of the apparatus to a Passamaquoddy visitor. Recorded by Jesse Walter Fewkes in Calais, Maine, March 1890, and probably in the Boston area about a year later. The 1890 recordings of Noel Josephs and Peter Selmore are the earliest known field-recorded cylinders of American Indian song and narrative. Fewkes published a report on the materials in "A Contribution to Passamaquoddy Folk-lore" in the Journal of American Folk-lore 3, no. 11 (1890): 257-80. The cylinders were received by exchange from the Peabody Museum in 1970. (AFS 14,737-1,739)

Interviews were conducted in Downeast Maine; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Boulder, Utah; Tucson and areas in northern Arizona;and Norfolk Connecticut, by Margo Davis, Oct. 1979-June 1980. Davis was traveling with the Audubon Expedition Institute for Environmental Education.

One audiocassette recorded at the 1988 Galax Fiddlers' Convention, Galax, Virginia, featuring Ralph L. McGee of Pilot, North Carolina, on fiddle; Will Keys of Jonesboro, Tennessee, on banjo; Don DePoy of Hampden, Maine, on guitar; and an unknown player on bass. AFC 1991/029: Maine Acadian Cultural Survey
Seven 7-inch tapes, 32 audiocassettes, 6 videocassettes, 80 black-and-white photographs, 2381 color slides, 4 linear inches of manuscript materials, 42 computer discs, and 6 inches of ephemera documenting the history and culture of Acadia. This documentation was used for the development of the Acadian Cultural Center in Madawaska, Maine, and includes literature, folk songs, step dance, storytelling, customs and other cultural traditions. Documented in the Upper Saint John River Valley by Ray Brassieur, Camila Bryce-Laporte, Guy F. Dubay, Stephanie A. Hall, Alan Jabbour, Howard W. Marshall, Lisa Ornstein, David A. Taylor, and David A. Whitman, June-August, 1991. Co-sponsored by the American Folklife Center, the North Atlantic Regional Office of the National Park Service, and the Acadian Cultural Center. The collection includes a 96-page conceptual framework and environment assessment of The Maine Acadian Culture Preservation Act, a 199-page report for the Maine Acadian Cultural Survey, a 92-page booklet entitled "Acadian Culture in Maine," and a 200-page report submitted to the North Atlantic Regional Office of the National Park Service by the American Folklife Center, January 1992. AFC 2000/001: Local Legacies Collection
Four hundred and five linear feet (approximately 90,000 manuscript pages, 500 sound recordings, 13,000 graphic materials, 350 electronic media, and 75 artifacts) of documentaion of local festivals, fairs, parades and other community-based events from each U.S. state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories and trusts. The Local Legacies Collection was donated through the efforts of individuals, organizations, and institutions asked to participate by members of Congress. AFC 2001/015: September 11, 2001, Documentary Project Collection
The collection documents reactions of ordinary citizens in the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States through sound and video recordings of interviews and personal narratives; as well as photographs, children's drawings, two scrapbooks, letters and e-mail, poems, ephemera, and a few artifacts. Some items were submitted as group projects of schools, libraries, and museums from 30 states in the U.S., and from American military service personnel and their families in Naples, Italy. AFC 2001/015:SR 188-201: Thirteen audiocassettes and 1 compact disc containing "man-on-the-street" interviews with various people in Portland, Maine. Recorded by students from the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, Fall 2001. The compact disc includes a compilation of these interviews by Rob Rosenthal.

One compact disc of 32 recordings of songs, stories, and anecdotes of 77-year old Irene Brookings, a farm woman of Maine. Recorded by Doreen Conboy, probably in Alna, Maine, 2001. AFC 2003/015: The New England Fifes and Drums Music Collection
Eight compact discs of recordings and 5 books of sheet music documenting the New England fife and drum community, with performances by the Middlesex County Volunteers, John Ciaglia, John Benoit, Xenia Funfschilling, and Scott Mitchell. Donated by Nancy A. Pearce and recorded, 1992-2003. The collection includes copies of the CD covers of six recordings by the Middlesex County Volunteers and a newsletter, The Volunteer Post, created by the Middlesex County Volunteers.

AFC 2004/027: Don Roy Trio and Florence Martin Concert Collection
Homegrown 2004 concert on Neptune Plaza. Collection consists of sound recording, videorecording, and photographs of a concert featuring two groups of performers playing and singing the traditional French music of Acadia. The Don Roy Trio performed traditional French Canadian fiddle tunes learned from Don Roy's family, and Cindy Roy demonstrated step dancing. Florence Rose Martin and her daughter Darlene performed French songs from the Acadian tradition of the St. John River Valley of New Brunswick and Maine collected over the years by their family in handwritten notebooks. In addition to the concert photographs there are three color snapshots of Florence and Darlene. [catalog record]

AFC 2009/018: Wayne Newell and Blanch Sockabasin Concert Collection
Collection of sound recordings, video recordings, and photographs documenting a concert by Wayne Newell and Blanch Sockabasin, members of the Passamaquoddy tribe in Maine, who present songs, stories, hymns, and a discussion of the culture and language of the Passamaquoddy and related Abenaki tribes, on September 16, 2009, in the Coolidge Auditorium, Library of Congress, as part of the Homegrown concert series sponsored by the American Folklife Center.
