Jacso receives RUSA BRASS Emerald Research Grant for business reference research

Peter Jacso, professor at the library and information science program of the Department of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Hawaii, is the recipient of a 2011 Emerald Research Grant.

This is one of two grants, administered by the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) and generously funded by Emerald Group Publishing, Inc. Each grant provides $5,000 to support research pertaining to business reference.

Jacso will create an open access resource for dynamic comparison and analysis of peer ratings of prominent marketing and marketing-related journals by members of various business associations and schools, as well as their ranking by bibliometric/scientometrics indicators generated from the Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar databases. The results will be presented at conferences and published in peer-reviewed academic and in professional journals.

Eileen Breen, senior publisher at Emerald, said, “As the assessment of content quality and relevance is becoming increasingly important to the business reference librarian’s role in providing accurate bibliometric data to faculty to inform their publication strategy and to inform the librarian’s own collection management in these difficult economic times, Peter Jacso’s research will make a valuable impact on the profession. Once again Emerald is delighted to support research that contributes to advancing the library and information science field.”

The grant will be presented at the RUSA Awards Reception, scheduled for 5 – 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 26 as a part of RUSA’s events at the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. The exact location of this event will be announced in late spring. For more information, visit RUSA’s website or the Annual Conference website.

Campbell, Cook receive Emerald Research Grant for business reference research

Diane K. Campbell, assistant professor, Rider University Library, and Ronald G. Cook, professor of entrepreneurial studies, Rider University, are co-recipients of one of the 2011 RUSA BRASS Emerald Research Grants.

This is one of two grants, administered by the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) and generously funded by Emerald Group Publishing, Inc. Each grant provides $5,000 to support research pertaining to business reference.

Campbell and Cook will use their research grant to interview entrepreneurs about their environmental scanning practices and will provide information on how these entrepreneurs work with librarians and what information they consider most important.  Entrepreneurs interact with a wide range of librarians, including public, academic and special librarians, but very little has been studied about their opinions of and interactions with librarians.

Eileen Breen, senior publisher at Emerald, said, “The research by Campbell and Cook is important on several accounts, and not least for demonstrating the role business reference librarians play in supporting entrepreneurship and small business development and engaging in collaborations with the business community. Emerald is proud to sponsor this research and looks forward to its outcome.”

The grant will be presented at the RUSA Awards Reception, scheduled for 5 – 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 26 as a part of RUSA’s events at the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. The exact location of this event will be announced in late spring. For more information, visit RUSA’s website or the Annual Conference website.

Joyce Saricks wins 2011 RUSA Margaret Monroe Award

Joyce Saricks, adjunct professor, Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University, and well-known adult readers’ advisory expert, is the winner of the Reference and User Services Association’s 2011 Margaret Monroe Award.

The Margaret Monroe Award honors a librarian, library and information science researcher or educator who has made a significant contribution to library adult services. Saricks is best known for her groundbreaking work in adult readers’ advisory while she was the coordinator of the Literature and Audio Services Department from 1983-2004 at the Downers Grove (Ill.) Public Library. Even now in her retirement from public library service, she stays busy providing her expertise to the library community in a variety of ways. For the last decade, she has been a regular contributor to Ebsco’s NoveList and also a reviewer and columnist for the American Library Association’s Booklist. Since 2004, she has taught the course on Reader’s Advisory at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University. In partnership with the American Library Association, she has published “The Readers’ Advisory Guide to Genre Fiction” and “Readers’ Advisory Service in the Public Library.”

“Joyce’s work is at the core of what Reader’s Advisory Services to Adults is all about,” said Allan M. Kleiman, chair of the award committee. “The Margaret Monroe spirit of linking books and adults is always evident throughout her writings, reviews and teaching. Those insights have allowed us all to learn from her to answer that timeless question, ‘Can you help me find something good to read?’”

Saricks previously received the Allie Beth Martin Award (1989) from the Public Library Association and the Librarian of the Year Award (2000) from the Romance Writers of America. She is a longtime active member of the Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) of RUSA, the CODES Readers’ Advisory Committee and the Reading List Committee.

Saricks’s citation will be presented at the RUSA Awards Reception, scheduled for 5 – 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 26 as a part of RUSA’s events at the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. The exact location of this event will be announced in late spring. For more information, visit RUSA’s website or the Annual Conference website.
