Best Practices for Government Desktop Publishers: Preparing and Preflighting Files for Trouble-Free Printing more details

This hands-on foundation course covers common technical problems with desktop publishing files and how to prevent them. Topics include:

  • Getting the best printed results from desktop publishing files;
  • How to prepare files for the different types of printing (offset, digital, wide-format, etc.);
  • Software programs for desktop publishing;
  • Limitations of using office software programs and strategies to get the best quality from them;
  • Packaging native files for print shops;
  • Creating press- and print-quality PDFs; and
  • Hands-on checking/preflighting of desktop publishing files.

This course gives the do’s, don’ts, and hands-on preflighting training that will help your agency procure quality printed materials, reduce technical problems with desktop publishing files, prevent scheduling delays, and keep your printing costs on budget.

Note: this class is not a course in how to use Adobe InDesign or other desktop publishing software. Although Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat are used in this course, only skills for preflighting and checking files are demonstrated. It’s recommended that students have additional basic desktop publishing training (such as Adobe InDesign) either before or after this class to complete their knowledge of this subject.

Prerequisites: None, other than basic computer skills.

InDesign CS6 Basics for Federal Publishers (New!) 

This basic hands-on introduction to InDesign teaches you how to create desktop publishing projects from start to finish with an emphasis on government publishing requirements. This concentrated hands-on course teaches how to properly create and edit Adobe PDF documents for access by users with disabilities. Students will learn:
