USCIS Launches Central I-9 on USCIS.gov

I-9 Central in Spanish: Transparent, Accessible and Usable
USCIS introduced I-9 Central in May 2011. Over 650,000 visitors have made use of this online resource. Now this one-stop shop for what you need to know about the Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9 is available in Spanish too on Central I-9!
U.S. employers are required by law to use a Form I-9 to verify the employment eligibility of everyone they hire, regardless of the new employee’s citizenship or immigration status. As a result, the Form I-9 is the most accessed form on USCIS.gov.
The new Spanish language I-9 Central, Central I-9, mirrors the English version of the site. The new site meets the needs of the Spanish-speaking community by answering common and complex questions about the Form I-9. Central I-9 makes it easy for employers to find information about completing the form correctly. The site will help users avoid common mistakes and understand the list of acceptable documents for confirming identity and employment authorization. It also includes information on the retention of Form I-9 and much more.
Users of the new Central I-9 website have access to the “Handbook for Employers: Instructions for Completing Form I-9 (M-274),”which was recently released in Spanish.  I-9 Central is updated frequently. Subscribe to Central I-9 to receive alerts.
Workers will find useful information on the site to help them prepare to complete Form I-9. There is also a section about employee rights and preventing discrimination. Workers can also visit E-Verify Self Check, a free service that allows workers and job seekers in the U.S. to check their own employment eligibility status online.

Working this Summer? Self Check is for You!

Are you looking for a summer job? Your next employer may use E-Verify to confirm that you are employment authorized. Did you know that you can use Self Check to make sure your employment authorization information is up to date?

Self Check is a free and reliable system - operated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) - that you can use to confirm your work eligibility. Nearly 150,000 people nationwide have already used Self Check. The program is also available in Spanish.

Self Check has four easy steps:
  1. Input your name, address and date of birth.
  2. Complete the short quiz that will confirm your identity. (This makes sure only you can access Self Check. DHS won’t know the questions you’re asked or the answers you give.)
  3. Enter your Social Security Number, an Alien Registration Number or I-94 number, or other document number.
  4. Get your results. The results page will either tell you that you’re employment authorized (your records are in order) or that a mismatch occurred. If there is a mismatch you can learn how to correct your records before your employer checks your information in E-Verify
Your information is always secure. When it’s this easy, why not try Self Check today?

E-Verify is a free, Web-based service from DHS that is used by employers at over 1.1 million worksites to electronically verify the employment eligibility of new employees. USCIS encourages job seekers to use Self Check.

E-Verify Customer Satisfaction Soars

The E-Verify program strives to meet the needs of its diverse customers. To help provide the best customer service, it participates in the American Customer Satisfaction Index, a national indicator of customer satisfaction.  In 2011, a random sample of E-Verify users - nearly 2/3 of which were small business owners - were surveyed on their satisfaction with the program. The questionnaire evaluated key features of E-Verify, including registration, tutorial, and overall satisfaction.
E-Verify received an overall customer satisfaction rating of 85, a three point increase from the 2010 survey. E-Verify also scored well when compared to its federal government counterparts; E-Verify’s score was 20 points above the current federal government average.
The results showed that E-Verify has:
  • Easy enrollment - Users find enrolling in and using E-Verify easy.
  • Resolved customer questions more quickly- We helped 93% of users resolve their issues with just one phone call.
  • Better tutorials - Users increased their rating of the E-Verify Tutorial by eight points!
  • User friendly processes - The Photo Matching tool, and the tentative non-confirmation (TNC) process were rated particularly valuable and user-friendly.
  • High overall customer satisfaction - E-Verify users remain highly likely to continue use of E-Verify, have high confidence in the program’s accuracy, and would recommend it to other employers.
With the results of the ASCI survey, we know that our efforts are succeeding and are encouraged to work harder to enhance the E-Verify process for our customers.  We are committed to making E-Verify work for you!

Password rules are getting harder and harder these days. “Not case sensitive.” “Use a capital letter.” “No special characters.” “Use special characters.” “No common names or words.” “Nothing in Pig Latin.”

  • Click 'Forgot your password' on the E-Verify login page.

Why Do You Use Self Check?

Self Check is a fast, free and voluntary service that allows you to check your employment eligibility in the United States. Users can check the accuracy of their employment eligibility records and get information on how to fix any errors they might find. A Service of E-Verify, Self Check was launched in a limited number of states in March 2011. Since then, more than 50,000 people have used it.

In the coming months, we’re preparing to make Self Check available nationwide. To help us ensure that our service is as good as it can be, we invite those of you who have already used Self Check to share your experiences, observations and recommendations. To do so, please email us at everifyselfcheck@dhs.gov with the subject line, “Why I Used Self Check.” You can also post feedback here in the comments section.

We’re particularly interested in finding out why you used Self-Check, and whether your experience was positive or negative. What worked well for you and what didn't? We’ll read your comments and, in a future post, highlight a few of your stories.

For those of you not already using Self Check, think about the benefits of using it. Employers are using E-Verify more and more to confirm the employment eligibility of their new hires. Fighting Fraud: E-Verify Can Now Verify Driver’s Licenses

E-Verify was recently upgraded to include a driver’s license verification feature. This is significant because driver’s licenses are presented by more than 80% of new hires to establish their identity during the employment eligibility verification process.

Mississippi is the first state to partner with the Department of Homeland Security to make driver’s license data available to be checked through E-Verify. E-Verify has an extremely high accuracy rate, and this anti-fraud enhancement makes the system even more reliable. In addition, E-Verify has recently added user-focused enhancements, including more help functions and streamlined enrollment.

Introducing "E-Verify Self Check," An Online Tool That Allows Workers to Check Their Own Employment Eligibility Status

(Posted by Alejandro Mayorkas, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director)

Today I am proud to announce the launch of E-Verify Self Check. E-Verify is a smart, simple, and effective web-based tool that allows us to work with employers to help them maintain a legal workforce. E-Verify Self Check is an innovative, first of its kind service that will help protect workers and streamline the E-Verify process for businesses.

Put simply, Self Check gives workers fast and secure access to their employment eligibility information before they apply for jobs. In this way, workers are able to identify whether there are any inaccuracies in their Social Security Administration or DHS records before they seek employment, and submit corrections for any inaccuracies ahead of time. Self Check also assists employers by reducing the number of tentative mismatches that could otherwise result when a worker’s government records are not updated.

Every aspect of E-Verify Self Check was designed to secure users’ personally identifiable information and to prevent misuse of the service. For example, E-Verify Self Check uses an identity assurance process to confirm that the person attempting to run a check is who he or she claims to be to avoid fraud or abuse.

Beginning today, the E-Verify Self Check service is available to users who maintain an address and are physically located in Arizona, Idaho, Colorado, Mississippi, Virginia or the District of Columbia. In the coming months, USCIS will continue to expand the E-Verify Self Check service to additional eligible users on a rolling basis.

We at USCIS are proud of this latest E-Verify enhancement, and we are confident that it will prove to be a valuable tool for employees and employers alike. I welcome your feedback as we move forward.

For more details on E-Verify Self Check, I invite you to read the accompanying News Release and Fact Sheet, or visit the E-Verify Self Check Web Page.

March 22 update from the USCIS Blog Team: Director Mayorkas participated in a live interview this morning on Federal News Radio on E-Verify Self Check. Listen to the interview here.

USCIS Announces E-Verify Employee Rights Initiatives

On March 17, USCIS Director Ali Mayorkas announced new civil rights initiatives tied to E-Verify, our program that allows employers to electronically verify the employment eligibility of newly hired employees. E-Verify is currently used by over 192,000 employers at 707,000 worksites and is growing by more than 1,000 employers a week.

The initiatives include:
  • Videos specially designed for employers and employees available in English and Spanish;
  • A dedicated hotline created to respond to employee inquiries also available in English and Spanish; and,
  • A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between USCIS and the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division.
We're releasing 2 informational videos depicting reenactments of real-world hiring scenarios in which employers and employees work together through the E-Verify process. The 20-minute videos are:
  • "Understanding E-Verify: Employer Responsibilities and Worker Rights," aimed at employers, explains E-Verify rules, procedures, and policies to employers with an emphasis on safeguarding employee privacy.
  • "Know Your Rights: Employee Rights and Responsibilities," is aimed at employees and places special emphasis on the rights of employees, particularly when an employee receives a message from E-Verify indicating a mismatch between the information that the employer entered into the system and the information contained in government databases. (Available in English and Spanish.)
USCIS helped the Department of Homeland Security's Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties make these videos a reality. The videos will be available beginning March 17 at:
Starting April 5, our new employee hotline will help E-Verify staff respond to employee inquiries, issues and complaints. The hotline will use an interactive voice response system. Employees will be able to choose from four options:
  1. General E-Verify information,
  2. Completing the Form I-9,
  3. Contesting an E-Verify case, and
  4. Filing a complaint regarding possible discrimination or employer misuse of the E-Verify program.
The employee hotline will contain options in both English and Spanish. We also will provide customer service representatives who speak both languages. The hotline number is (888) 897-7781 and again, opens for business on April 5.

Finally, USCIS Director Ali Mayorkas just signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division. The MOA establishes the relationship and process for referrals between the USCIS and Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Office of Special Counsel for Unfair Immigration-Related Employment Practices with respect to allegations of discrimination from employer use of E-Verify and information regarding the misuse, abuse or fraudulent use of E-Verify.

I'm excited about the release of the informational videos, the startup of the employee hotline, and the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement. These initiatives showcase our commitment to continuing to improve the E-Verify resources available to both employers and employees and thus help the federal government continue to strengthen the integrity of the E-Verify program. For more information about E-Verify, please visit www.dhs.gov/E-Verify.
