I have taken an oath to uphold the Second Amendment of the Constitution which recognizes the right of law abiding citizens to own and use firearms.
While we must provide the law enforcement community the tools necessary to combat society's criminal element, we must also ensure the rights and freedoms of law-abiding citizens are not infringed upon. Sportsmen, hunters, gun enthusiasts and citizens concerned for their personal safety have a right to own guns for these legitimate purposes.
The ability of decent, hard-working Americans to own a gun, whether for sport or protection, must not be compromised. Only a government that does not trust its citizens would refuse them the right to bear arms. In the U.S. House of Representatives, I worked to protect the rights of gun owners by promoting legislation that protects the Second Amendment and fighting legislation that poses a threat to our Constitutional right to keep and bear arms. I will continue to do so in the U.S. Senate.
Unfortunately, this right is under attack. In recent years, we have seen efforts to legislate through the courts with cases brought against those who manufacture and sell firearms in an attempt to hold them accountable for the actions of others. On top of that, cities have imposed strict regulations and laws banning guns. Fortunately, these laws have been overturned by the Supreme Court, but I am concerned with how close many of these decisions have been. With that in mind, I will examine the record of judicial nominees very closely to ensure they will uphold our Second Amendment rights before casting a vote to confirm their nominations.
As a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I work closely with the National Rifle Association, Gun Owners of America and other pro-Second Amendment groups to preserve and strengthen gun owners’ rights. I am continuously monitoring gun legislation closely and should any bills come to the floor of the Senate for a vote, I will uphold and support gun owner’s rights.
