DoD IG Strategic Plan
Mission
Our mission is to provide independent, relevant, and timely oversight of the Department of Defense that: supports the Warfighter; promotes accountability, integrity, and efficiency; advises the Secretary of Defense and Congress; and informs the Public.
Vision
Our vision is to be a model oversight organization in the Federal government by leading change, speaking truth, and promoting excellence; a diverse organization, working together as one professional team, recognized as leaders in our field.
The Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA), passed by Congress and signed by the President in 1993, provides a tool to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of all Federal agencies. The Act directs Executive Branch agencies to develop strategic plans, to align agency activities with concrete missions and goals, to manage and measure results to justify appropriations and authorizations, and to design budgets that reflect strategic missions.
The purpose of GPRA is to increase citizen confidence in Government performance, to enhance Federal program management, effectiveness and public accountability, and to improve Congressional decision making on where and how to commit the Nation's financial and human resources.
The Office of Inspector General, Department of Defense (DoD IG), first established a strategic plan in response to GPRA in 1994. The DoD IG Strategic Plan has been revised for Fiscal Years (FY) 2012-2017, reflecting the new corporate philosophy of the Office of Inspector General.
The Strategic Plan serves as a learning and management tool for all DoD IG employees and stakeholders, to ensure that everyone within our community understands the values, mission, vision, and goals that provide the strategic framework of our organization.
