How do I read the Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) Payment Summary Page?

You can see the My MSP Payment Summary Page if you have open MSP cases. The My MSP tab of MyMedicare.gov provides you with your Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) claims. A primary payer is the insurance company or program that pays your medical benefits first. A secondary payer is the insurance company or program that pays a portion or all of the remaining medical charges not covered by the primary payer. MSP is the term used by Medicare when Medicare is not responsible for paying first on a claim.

The MSP Payment Summary page displays all of your MSP information, at a Case level. If you click on a Case ID, you will be taken to the MSP Payment Detail page, where you may see details associated with that Case ID, including the Claims.

The MSP Cases displayed on this page give you basic information about each case:

  • Case ID – Unique identifier assigned by the ReMas system to the case.  A case can include a high volume of claims.  Clicking on this Case ID link will take you to the MSP Payment Detail page where you may view details associated with the selected Case.
  • Case Type – The type of case, such as auto no- fault, liability and workers compensation.
  • Date of Incident – MSP Effective Date or the date the beneficiary sustained the injury.
  • Conditional Charges – The sum of all conditional charges associated with claims that make up the Case.
  • Total Charges - The sum of all total charges associated with claims that make up the Case.
  • Last Updated – The date that the information on your account was most recently modified.
Note: The MSP data displayed is information which has been received and processed by Medicare. If you do not see MSP information that you searched for, please check back at a later time when Medicare has received or processed this information.

Pending Cases: If the "Total Conditional Payments" field reads "Pending," on the Payment Summary page, no payments have been made on the case and clicking on thr Case ID, will open the MSPRP screen with the case loaded.

Current Cases: If the "Total Conditional Payments" or "Total Charge" field contains a dollar amount, on the Payment Summary page, clicking on the Case ID will open the payment detail screen, which will have a listing of all claims and payments made against the case to date. Clicking on the Case ID from the Payment Detail Page, will open the MSPRP screen, with the case loaded.
