The mission of the State Department is to advance freedom for the benefit of the American people and the international community by helping to build and sustain a more democratic, secure, and prosperous world composed of well-governed states that respond to the needs of their people, reduce widespread poverty, and act responsibly within the international system.

The Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator at the Department of States leads the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the U.S. Government’s initiative to help save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS around the world. This historic commitment is the largest by any nation to combat a single disease internationally, and PEPFAR investments also help alleviate suffering from other diseases across the global health spectrum. PEPFAR is implemented by a number of U.S. Government agencies. The U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate to coordinate and oversee the U.S. global response to HIV/AIDS. The Coordinator reports directly to the Secretary of State.

In support of the implementation of the U.S. National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS), the Secretary of State submitted recommendations to the President based on lessons learned in implementing the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in countries around the world.
